3-D Reservoir Modeling: Hydrocarbons and Aquifers

چکیده
From the moment we are born, we begin taking in data through our senses: smell, taste, touch, sound, and, perhaps the most important of all senses, sight. Our visual input is a color, 4-D animation of the world around us. The physical tools we are given at birth dictate the way we learn, analyze, and interpret external input. Computer animation has evolved to the point where we can visualize, and in fact analyze, animated 3-D and 4-D datasets in real time, in a way similar to the way we have been trained since birth. In the earth sciences, we are just beginning to scratch the surface of possibility.

II . 3 . 2 Rapid Prediction of CO 2 Movement in Aquifers , Coal Beds , and Oil and Gas Reservoirs
Background Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of reservoir simulation tools for the oil industry, and there are high-quality simulators available that handle effectively many of the flow problems appropriate to oil and gas reservoirs. One area where simulator development is continuing, however, is in the simulation of processes in which multiple components transfer between ...
متن کاملHydraulic controls on injection of carbon dioxide into deep saline aquifers
Sequestration of carbon dioxide in geologic formations, both deep aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs, has the potential to signi...cantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of that greenhouse gas. Injection into a deep saline formation di¤ers from injection into a hydrocarbon reservoir in that there is no produced ‡uid from the aquifer and the hydrogeologic characterization of both the re...
متن کاملVolatile hydrocarbons inhibit methanogenic crude oil degradation
Methanogenic degradation of crude oil in subsurface sediments occurs slowly, but without the need for exogenous electron acceptors, is sustained for long periods and has enormous economic and environmental consequences. Here we show that volatile hydrocarbons are inhibitory to methanogenic oil biodegradation by comparing degradation of an artificially weathered crude oil with volatile hydrocarb...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Rock Integrity and Fault Reactivation in the Cap Rock and Reservoir Rock Due to Pressure Variations
Cap rocks are dams which can prevent the upward movement of hydrocarbons. They have disparities and weaknesses including discontinuities, crushed areas, and faults. Gas injection is an effective mechanism for oil recovery and pore pressure. With increasing pore pressure, normal stress is reduced, and the integrity of impermeable boundaries (cap rock, fault, etc.) becomes instable. A successful ...
متن کاملSeismic monitoring of reservoir fluid flow: Fundamental theory and examples1
Time-lapse 3-D seismic monitoring of subsurface rock property changes incurred during reservoir fluid-flow processes is an emerging new diagnostic technology for optimizing hydrocarbon production. I discuss the physical theory relevant for three-phase fluid flow in a producing oil reservoir, and rock physics transformations of fluid-flow pressure, temperature and pore-fluid saturation values to...
